Sometimes, the act of getting to the gym hurts just as much as actually working out. Thankfully, energetic fitness instructors with great music help get us in the mood to sweat.

Spin instructor Barbara Fellars is known around town for her killer spin class, dance-party playlist and her ripped physique.

We asked this tough girl a few questions about how she gets into shape and stays motivated. Plus, she shared some of the best workout music to help us get our grooves on.

LP: How long have you worked in fitness?
BF: I have worked in the fitness industry since 2002. I have always been very active and have a passion for helping others stay active as well. Fitness is hard work, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. The best part of my job is making it fun!

LP: What are your personal favorite workouts like?
BF: Tough! Spinning is my all time favorite (of course), but I’m also in the weight room about 3-4 times a week. I like to incorporate core/abs work into every workout. You can also find me grunting through Kettlebell workouts and on long runs.

LP: What are some important things people should keep in mind about exercise?
BF: One thing people should keep in mind is the role food and diet play in exercise. Eating a balanced meal/snack before working out can completely enhance your overall performance and your ability to go that extra mile.

In exercising, it is also important to know when to stop. As we push ourselves, sometimes we forget to listen to what our bodies are telling us. If something is painful, it could be a sign you are overexerting your muscles. Finally, it is so important to remember to stretch! Stretching and foam rolling after your workouts can improve circulation, help to lengthen tight muscles, tendons and ligaments and reduce stress!

LP: How does music influence your class and what are your go-to songs?
BF: Music is one of the key components to a good spinning class. The right music can keep you going and make a workout fun. Seeing a student’s face who has just heard the beginning notes of their favorite song is priceless. It keeps them moving and motivated. The same can be said of my own workouts! A few songs that have become staples in my classes are:

They Don’t Care About Us – Michael Jackson

Animal (DJ’s from Mars remix) – Neon Trees

More (RedOne remix) – Usher

Lullabies (Adventure Club remix) – Yuna

Sweet Nothing – Calvin Harris and Florence Welch

LP: Can you give us a sample playlist?
BF: Yes, I can!

(Warm up) – This is What it Feels Like – Armin Van Buuren ft. Trevor Guthrie

My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark – Fall Out Boy

Let’s Go – Will.i.am ft. Chris Brown

I Need Your Love (Nicky Romero remix) – Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding

Play Hard – David Guetta ft. Ne-Yo and Akon

If I Lose Myself (Alesso remix) – One Republic

Blurred Lines – Robin Thicke ft. T.I. and Pharrell

Hey Baby – Pitbulls ft. T-Pain

Let There Be Love (Jump Smokers remix) – Christina Aguilera

(Cool down) Loud and Clear – Olly Murs

You may have heard that our Chicago Blackhawks are in this little competition called the Stanley Cup playoffs. You’ve probably also heard that Chicagoans take a lot of pride in our Blackhawks.

Whether you were born and raised in Chicago or are a transplant to Chi-Town there is a lot to love in this gem of a city. Yes, we have some long winters and bipolar weather, but those are just semantics in comparison to what Chicago has to offer: architecture, nightlife, museums, restaurants, music…and how about our sports teams?

Even before we made it to the final round in NHL Hockey, we proudly wore those red, black and white colors to represent who we are as a team and as a city. Thanks to lifestyle and clothing brand, City of Win, you can now rock a tee from their Summer 2013 collection while rooting for the home team.

Founded by four friends in May 2012, this Chicago company has created some truly sick designs, widely influenced by music and Chicago’s artist community.

“City of Win designs draw from the spirit of the city,” said co-founder Greg Morrison. “We’re also inspired by the spirit of everyday champions being the best they can be, from all walks of life.”

If you are looking for an adrenaline rush while still getting in a workout – sign up for a flying trapeze class at TSNY Chicago. Warning: It’s addicting!

Trapeze School New York – Chicago makes flying trapeze accessible to anyone who seeks a fitness challenge and the thrill of feeling alive, and you don’t need to be a gymnast or aerialist to participate as they offer classes for all levels, from first-timers and beginners to advanced flyers.

In your first class, you will learn a few Flying Trapeze tricks and even try a ‘catch’ as you enhance your ability to move gracefully and powerfully through the air. It’ll bring out the child in you, taking you back to recess in grade school, swinging from the monkey bars on the playground, but takes it to a whole new level of challenge and excitement. In addition, you’re working your body hard, engaging different muscles and leaving you sore days later.

For a fun and safe first class, wear socks, fitted clothing that covers your knees, no jewelry and arrive early to warm-up. The flying trapeze instructors are very knowledgeable, personable and you can tell they love their jobs – and you’ll see why after your first flight.

Before letting anyone in or on any equipment, they will walk you through everything you need to do step-by-step so that there are no surprises when you are in the air, because that in itself is enough.

Learn to trust because its one of those activities where you are better and have more fun when you stop thinking too much about it and just do it. As you fly through the air, your instructors will guide you and ensure it’s not just effective, but fun, and you’ll be surprised by what you tricks you accomplish by the end of class.

TSNY Chicago has two locations: they are open year-round indoors at the Broadway Armory Park, but to really take in the full experience and soar through the fresh air overlooking Lake Michigan, take advantage of their second location outdoors at Belmont Harbor in Lincoln Park, open late spring through end of summer.

BY MARIS CALLAHAN

You might not expect to find a seafood shanty in the Gold Coast, but in a city where people put an Italian beef sandwich on top of their burgers, anything is possible. Da Lobsta is a Gold Coast newcomer that does one thing, lobster rolls, and does it well.

At Da Lobsta, you can order a top split hot dog-style roll with tarragon mayonnaise and garlic butter or one of their internationally influenced rolls, from an Asian lobster roll with soy mayo and Asian slaw to a Mexican lobster roll with salsa and chihuahua cheese.

No matter where you are, a lobster roll’s essential ingredients are simply a top split bun and lobster meat. The filling includes a few parts of the lobster: claw, tail and knuckles, dressed with mayonnaise and possibly lemon, paprika, Old Bay seasoning or celery.

At Da Lobsta, you can choose from one of eight lobster roll varieties and an assortment of lobster-laden side dishes, like lobster mac-n-cheese, lobster-crab spinach dip and lobster grilled cheese.

The traditional roll is served on a buttery, toasted bun complemented with the perfect amount of lobster. The bun is lightly dressed with tangy, tarragon mayonnaise, which even this mayo-hater liked.

Although decadent and certainly not low-cal, the lobster roll practically screams summer, beaches and sunshine. Enjoy one on the tree-lined patio outside the restaurant or inside the nautically inspired

Da Lobsta, 12 East Cedar Street. For more information call (312) 929-2423 or visit online.

I have an unspoken pact with myself that if I happen to dine at the same restaurant twice (which happens less frequently than you might think considering exactly how much time I spend in restaurants), I have to order something I’ve never tried. There are exceptions, of course, and one that immediately springs to mind is the Wrightwood Salad, on the menus at Frasca, Crosby Kitchen, Dunlay’s on the Square, Dunlay’s on Clark and D.O.C Wine Bar.

There are only a few things that I could actually eat every day. There are things I say that I’d like to eat every day: Pad Thai from Opart Thai, Tacos Pastor from Big Star, but in reality, eating 700 tacos a year could have some serious consequences. The Wrightwood Salad is one that I could easily eat daily, for lunch or dinner, without complaint.

The Wrightwood Salad starts with your standard issue bed of mixed green topped with rotisserie chicken, tomatoes, avocado, corn, almonds, fresh goat cheese and craisins…and maybe even more next-to-godliness that I can’t recall. It’s a filling salad that you’ll start eating…and ten minutes later, when you look down, there seems to be just as much salad on the plate as when your server placed it in front of you.

Even though this salad is available all over the city, we suggest you head to Frasca, where it’s a perfect starter before you build your own bruschetta or mainline a buy-one-get-one pizza on a Wednesday night. Whenever you have the opportunity to chase a salad with a few servings of carbs, you should probably do exactly that.

Frasca, 3358 North Paulina Street. For more information call 773-248-5222 or visit online.

Martini, anyone?

James Bond preferred his martini shaken, not stirred, Hemingway opted for a martini with equal parts gin and vermouth. I prefer mine a little more modern, with vodka instead of gin. After careful consideration, I have found a favorite martini in Chicago in the Gabitini at Mon Ami Gabi in Lincoln Park.

Mon Ami Gabi is a classic French restaurant located in the historic Belden-Stratford building overlooking the Lincoln Park Zoo. The Belden-Stratford houses two restaurants, a hotel and private residences. Through the main door you are swept into a past Chicago where you could envision flapper dresses, pearls, Gatsby and of course martinis. I have a plan to live there in my later years and wear lots of furs (vegan and vintage of course).

Step into the restaurant and if you’re lucky, grab one of the six seats at the bar. The intimate bar is a great way to get introduced to Mon Ami without the need for a reservation. Order a Gabitini – made with few ingredients but ones that play together harmoniously.

The richness of the stuffed blue cheese olives cuts the crisp vodka and makes you forget all about your tough day at work. The house made blue cheese stuffed olives are such simplistic perfection they may just convince you that they would be easy enough to make at home. Warning – it is much harder then you would think. Believe me, I tried.

Tucked away in the park Mon Ami can make you feel as if you’ll turn the corner and see La Tour Eiffel instead of the Five Guys on Clark Street. So grab a martini and reminisce about the last time you were in Paris…or the last time you won a poker game to save the world.

Kylie Egge doesn’t run your typical upholstery shop. As the owner of Recovered Interior, she has an eye for imagining overlooked vintage and antique furniture as eye-catching statement pieces.

Since discovering furniture re-design five years ago, her craft is one part “search and rescue” and one part reimagination. Think carved side chairs with punchy peacock patterned fabric or a vintage porter’s chair recovered in hunter green velvet and a matching glossy green frame for a monochromatic effect.

While aspiring do-it-yourselfers flock to Recovered Interior for intimate four-student upholstery classes, Egge has also joined forces with Cami Schneck to create furniture from scratch. In their Recovered Interior Collection, each piece is hand made and produced in Chicago, a rarity in an era where furniture is increasingly mass-produced and its manufacturing outsourced. The result is a stunning collection made from unexpected materials for high impact.

Kylie gave us the inside story on what makes the collection special, what piece is her absolute favorite and what we can expect from Recovered Interior in the future.

KA: Tell me more about your new Recovered Interior Collection? How did it come about?
KE: The collection can be described as “upholstery with a rebellious spirit.” We start with classic, timeless shapes and add unexpected elements that resist convention to create unique pieces with an edge. We are introducing five pieces: the Alloy Chair, Levitating Daybed, Chromatic Bench, Chained Club Chair and our signature piece appropriately named the Rebellion Settee.

KA: Are there any colors, fabrics, or other materials you’re especially excited about these days when it comes to furniture?
KE: I am really interested in color variation in gradients and tone-on-tone color with contrasting textures. I think that this is really evident in the collection. I have designed a large-scale ombre fabric exclusive to this collection that I am really excited about as well.

KA: If you had to pick, which piece in the collection would you say is your favorite?
KE: That’s a tough one! If I had to choose I would say the Chromatic Bench. I think it is a simple, yet interesting piece that is very versatile. I can envision our clients using it at a dining table, at the end of a bed, entryway or even as additional seating in a living room. The felted wool fabrics used in the upholstery have always been a favorite material to work with.

KA: What can we expected from you and Recovered Interior next?
KE: You can definitely expect to see more vintage one-of-a-kind pieces for sale. I have a few in the works that are going to be hard to part with but I can’t wait to get them out there for people to see. We will hopefully see the private label collection expand as well. I have already been sketching a few new pieces.

The entire Recovered Interior Collection and Vintage Collection are available for sale at recoveredinteror.com. Call 773.656.3206 for more information.

Though I’m lucky to live in a city where there are so many vegetarian and vegan restaurants, it isn’t always easy for this vegetarian to find a good veggie burger. Luckily, the veggie burger at Crosby’s Kitchen on Southport is one of the best I’ve tried.

Before I became a vegetarian, I’d always enjoyed burgers, especially during the summer when they are practically a tradition. At some burger joints, the veggie burgers tend to be bland.

Crosby’s Kitchen is an exception. The restaurant serves a variety of fresh-cooked meats, including homemade turkey burgers, barbequed sandwiches and rotisserie chicken. Crosby’s Kitchen definitely didn’t skimp on the vegetarian option and I think I may have found the best veggie burger in Chicago.

Instead of using a frozen veggie patty, Crosby’s makes fresh veggie burgers with rice, black beans, sweet potato and walnuts. The black beans are a perfect option for both vegetarians and meat eaters who fear tofu — and they are filling. The walnuts make the burger slightly crunchy, while the sweet potato thickens the burger and gives it an authentic texture.

The best part of the burger is the topping. First, there are wild mushrooms, which add a “meaty” element to the burger to quench your umami craving. The burger is also layered with spicy jalapeno mayonnaise and a generous portion of sharp cheddar cheese (and who doesn’t love cheese?). The veggie burger at Crosby’s Kitchen is the perfect amount of healthy and savory — and you don’t even miss the meat.

Crosby’s Kitchen, 3455 North Southport Avenue. For more information call 773-883-2425 or visit online.

This post is part of our Barely Refined series that gives readers a weekly dose of all things decadent and indulgent.

Contrary to popular opinion, there are a few cases where judging a book by its cover is totally legit. For example: anywhere that considers taxidermy an acceptable form of decor, anyone who still thinks frosted tips are an attractive hairstyle, and anything with the words “ultra” and “lounge” in the name, just to list a few.

While drawing conclusions can be especially easy in the restaurant game, some places require a closer look – like the deservedly praised, inaptly named Chinatown gem Go 4 Food.

Between delicious platings, refreshingly kind servers and a great BYOB policy, it’d be a vast understatement to say this place has a lot going 4 it (get it?). But after three visits to Go 4 Food, one dish reigns supreme across my mind, heart and stomach.

The Shrimp in Salted Egg Yolk is prepared either shell-on or shell-less and tastes like no dish I’ve encountered during my long, tawdry affair with Asian cuisine. With the shells removed, the shrimp is cooked perfectly inside a coating that’s equal parts crispy batter, powdery egg, and presumably crack. Or salt, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it’s equally addictive.

No joke, I want to eat this dish until I’m no longer physically able to consume solid food. And as someone wise once said, when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life eating something, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. So go forth, conquer, and drop by Go 4 Food to prepare you for the journey.

Go 4 Food, 212 West 23rd Street. For more information call 312-842-8688 or visit online.
